Slideshow - Building a New 17ft Sandy Point V-Hull
Tyndall Marine is not a
big mass production boat factory where nobody knows your name. We're a small
indie shop. Our talented craftsmen are proud to be part of Carolina's fine boat
building tradition of doing things the old fashioned labor-intensive way.
When we say "hand made"
we aren't referring to some guy holding a chopper gun in his hands. We refuse to
use chopped glass. Everything you see is alternating layers of hand laid
biaxial and woven roving for strength, durability and lighter weight.
Why do you see wood proudly
displayed in photos of the Tyndall 17 Sandy Point when every major boat factory
is crowing about high tech plastics and honeycombed this and that? Two main
reasons. First, all our boats have custom interiors and wood gives us the
flexibility to do that. We start out by interviewing customers about how they
plan to use their boats and then help them design a unique vessel just for them.
Want a custom bow casting
deck? Want it recessed so the kids or older riders will feel stable and safe? We
can do that. In fact, we'll build you practically anything you want - you'll
never, ever be just another guy driving Brand X again. And in three years when
you decide you wished you'd ordered a stern casting deck, you don't have to
finance a new boat. We can just easily cut in and add that feature. Why? Because
you bought a boat made with good old wood and traditional resin.
The second reason we use
traditional resin and traditional wood construction is that should something
ever happen to your boat - it can be fixed! Break a plastic stringer on some
production boats and it may as well be totaled. Super thin high-tech vacuumed
bagged chopped hulls are interesting from a technological standpoint but once
they crack from stress, they'll never be the same. Do you want your boat to be
just as highly depreciable and disposable a commodity as today's laptop
computers have become? I wouldn't.
In contrast, last year a
customer brought us a Sandy Point that rolled off its trailer and down an
embankment at speed on a highway entrance ramp after a blowout. We cut out a
section of compromised decking around the center console, re-glassed the deck
area, sprayed down new spatter gelcoat, faired scrapes and repainted a section
of hull, replaced the man's outboard hood and had him back fishing two weekends
later. Try that with a high-tech boat.
